下呂石
Gero Stone (Gero-ishi)
Gero Glassy rhyolite
約12万年前、下呂温泉の東にある湯ヶ峰火山の噴火により生まれた石。ガラス質安山岩。黒色でとても硬く、加工しやすく、鋭い切れ味の下呂石は、石器時代には、石鏃（いしやじり）や石槍（いしやり）などの石器の材料として利用された。縄文期代には、中部地方を中心に、遠くは富山県や千葉県まで交易によって運ばれている。下呂でしか採れない石。
Gero Stone is a black, glassy andesitic rock formed approximately 120,000 years ago during the eruption of Mt. Yugamine, located east of Gero Onsen.
It is extremely hard, easy to shape, and known for its sharp cutting edge, making it an ideal material for ancient stone tools such as arrowheads and spears.
During the Jomon period, Gero Stone was highly valued and traded widely—from central Japan to as far asToyama and Chiba.
It is a unique volcanic stone found only in Gero.
小川石
Ogawa Stone
下呂石と同じく、湯ヶ峰の噴火で生まれた石。下呂石よりも隙間が多いため、もろくて外見は下呂石と違うが、成分的には同じ。小川石は、赤褐色、または灰色っぽい色で板状に割れる性質があり、風化しにくいため、墓石や石碑として利用されている。下呂でしか採れない石。
Ogawa Stone, also born from the same volcanic eruption as Gero Stone, is softer and more porous.
Though different in appearance—reddish-brown or gray—it shares the same mineral composition.
It naturally breaks into flat plates and resists weathering, making it ideal for use in gravestones and monuments.
Like Gero Stone, Ogawa Stone is a rare local resource found only in the Gero region.
下呂石物語
下呂市には、「下呂石」と名付けられた真っ黒な石があります。光にかざすと、キラキラとした結晶がたくさん現れて、まるで星空のようです。温泉街の東にある湯ヶ峰から出たこの石が、大きな謎を秘めていることがわかったのは比較的最近のことです。
この石を手にとると、地下の深部の様子や阿寺断層の作り出す地形、湯ヶ峰火山と下呂温泉の関係、石器を作ったはるか二万年前の人々のくらしなど、地域の自然や文化の奥深さに思いを馳せることができます。
In the city of Gero, there is a jet-black stone known simply as “Gero City.”When held up to the light, countless shimmering mineral flecks appear—like stars scattered across the night sky.
This remarkable stone originates from Mt. Yugamine, located east of the hot spring town.
It was only in recent years that its hidden mysteries began to be uncovered.
By holding this stone in your hands, you can feel a connection to the deep underground world, the landscapes shaped by the Atera Fault, the relationship between Mt. Yugamine and Gero Onsen, and even the lives of people who crafted stone tools some 20,000 years ago.

組曲「下呂石物語」実行委員会は、地元の子供たちや観光客に向けて、これらの楽器を使った「石琴コンサート」や、下呂石が生まれてから現在までの長い歴史をもとに描かれた『組曲「下呂石物語」～物語・挿絵付き～』の公演を行いながら、下呂石誕生の経緯、下呂石の魅力、下呂オリジナルブランドとしての価値などを伝えています。
